Social media is filled with young, ‘famous’ icons that are traveling the world, have incredible bodies, have lots of money, etc. and it can really bring you down if you let it. Society has put a lot of pressures on vanity and materialistic things, but why? To be honest, I can’t answer that question. But what I can tell you is that those expectations are unrealistic and you shouldn’t compare yourself to them. That’s really hard I know, but let me put it into perspective for you:

Recently, I came across a post by ABC4 News on Facebook about a 7-year-old girl, Emma Mertens, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Her family says “...she's the most kind, big-hearted girl.” With that being said, Emma could have asked you anything, as her “wish” per se. Normally, kids would want to go on a big trip or meet their idol, or something along those lines, which is understandable. Kid’s in these situations deserve the world. Yet, Emma asked for something else. All Emma wants is for people to send her a letter with a picture from their dog. Emma’s family doesn’t own a dog of their own, yet she really enjoys helping watch and take care of her neighbor's dogs when they are gone. It started with family and friends sending her these letters to help her get through her treatments, and now she has received over 50,000 letters from across the globe. For the full article, click here.

Emma’s story is a great example of focusing on what’s most important in life. For her, it’s her love of dogs because that’s what makes her the happiest. What makes you most happy? Is it dogs as well? Is it your family? Your friends? Hobbies? Whatever it may be, don’t lose sight of it. Focus on what brings value to YOUR life, and don’t let anyone tell you that you're living your life wrong. You have the paper and pen. Write your own story.
