Hacks For Handling Roommates

Now's the time that a lot of students are deciding where to live for Fall Semester. Often times, you have a few roommates that you don't know, which can be pretty intimidating. We’ve all heard stories about roommates, both the good and the bad. Whether you already have roommates or you are about to take that next step as an adult, I’m here to tell you how to make the best of it.
1. Introduce yourself
It sounds silly I know, you probably already know their name or you’ll hear it when you first meet them but go deeper than that. Tell them about your likes and dislikes, your schedule, everything (maybe save the personal information for later on…). By opening up and being confident about who you are, your roommates will have a better chance at understanding why you do the things you do and vise versa. Here’s a great article on the habits of a confident woman and how to improve confidence (don’t worry, we’ve all
been there).

2. Set your expectations early and clearly
By expectations, I don’t mean rules. You don’t want to parent each other. What I mean by expectations are things like do you plan on sharing dishes, pots, and pans? Will you take turns buying items like paper towels and garbage bags? Will you share groceries or will you each buy your own gallon of milk? How will the chores be divided? By discussing these expectations, it will help the adjustment process move along quicker and things will be less awkward. Here’s an idea on how to keep track of chores and groceries.

3. Get to know your roommates
I mean, you’re going to be living with this person for some time so you might as well make the best of it and get to know a little bit about them. By showing interest in your roommate, it shows them that you care, which works out better in the long run for when issues come up. Some of my favorite memories with my roommates are roommate dinners and spa day Sundays. We were able to relax, laugh and get to know one another, creating a lasting bond. The dinners don’t have to be extravagant, here’s a 3 ingredient chicken taco recipe that tastes pretty good, won’t break the bank, and will definitely feed you and your roommates
(with leftovers too)!

4. Be the roommate you’d want to have
Yes, I’m talking about ‘The Golden Rule’ we’ve all heard since starting school. But think about it. If you’re clean and organized, there's a better chance that your roommate will be (or learn to be for that matter). You don’t have to be best friends with each roommate, and as a matter of fact, there’s a good chance that won’t be the case. The bottom line is that everyone is different and that's okay. But if you expect to have dirty dishes put away in the dishwasher, you better make sure yours are always in there. Here are some tips on how to better organize your college home.
